Comfort food at its finest, this Kumara & Pumpkin Mash is a winter essential. With its naturally sweet flavour and velvety texture, it's the perfect side dish for roasts, slow-cooked meals, or even as a base for hearty veg bowls. Simple, nourishing, and easy to customise with your favourite spices or herbs, it’s a crowd-pleaser you’ll come back to all season long.
Ingredients:

2 cups orange kumara, peeled and chopped
2 cups pumpkin, peeled and chopped
2 tbsp butter
¼ cup milk or plant-based alternative
Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
In a large pot, bring kumara and pumpkin to a boil in salted water.
Reduce heat and simmer until tender (around 15–20 minutes).
Drain well and return to the pot.
Add butter and milk, then mash until smooth and fluffy.
Season with salt and pepper. Stir through any optional extras and serve warm.
Optional Extras
1 tsp grated fresh ginger for a subtle zing
A sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon for warmth
¼ cup grated cheese for extra creaminess
A clove of garlic, boiled with the veg for extra flavour
Chopped herbs (like parsley or chives) stirred through before serving
Pro Tips:
Dry the veg before mashing: After draining, return the veg to the hot pot for a minute to let excess moisture steam off—this helps avoid watery mash.
For a richer flavour, roast the kumara and pumpkin instead of boiling before mashing.
Use a hand mixer if you like your mash ultra-smooth and creamy.
